Becoming a Transgender Ally

Do you know anyone that is transgender? Whether you have someone in your life that is trans or not, it is important to educate yourself on how to be an ally for the transgender community.

In today’s episode, I am joined by mother/daughter duo Bridget Sampson and Jackie Thornhill of the Transgender School. When Jackie came out to Bridget as a transgender woman, it did not go as well as it could have. Bridget slowly began to become more comfortable with Jackie’s transitioning and has since become an ally and advocate for the transgender community. Together, Bridget and Jackie have created The Transgender School to help educate more people about how to support transgender people in their lives.

Restoring Peace Globally with Dan Kahn

Who is advocating for peace throughout your local community? You may not even know the people within your community that are helping to build and spread peace, but after this episode, you will appreciate their work more than ever. 

In today’s episode, I am joined by my friend, Dan Kahn. He is on the leadership council of the Peace Alliance and the National Field Coordinator, teaching empathy skills to teenagers in community programs in Tallahassee, FL as a case manager. Dan promotes the growth of restorative justice practices statewide as Executive Director of the Florida Restorative Justice Program and coaches peacebuilding advocates globally. Peacebuilding can be challenging to navigate but Dan’s career is a testament to the change it consistently brings.

How have you recognized racism among people of color? Speaking up for these communities that are being discriminated against is something we can all do more of.

After realizing that indigenous people were being treated poorly among other people of color, Kathy and Deb recognized their privilege with the color of their skin and wanted to help support these communities. Together they started the Great Lakes Peace Center to help build peace and stand up for these minority communities.
